Obituary for Melvin Farmer

In the wee hours of May 5, 2022, Mr. Melvin Farmer, a lifelong Holmes County resident, left his home in West, Mississippi to be with Jesus. Melvin was born to Eric and Lorene Farmer on February 16, 1936. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Herbert Farmer and Hazel Farmer Burrell.

Melvin is survived by a loving family who will cherish his memory always. He married the love of his life, Freddie Ann, on March 1, 1957. The two of them were happily married for 65 years and shared their love with their only child, Ricky Farmer. Though they never had a daughter, when Ricky married Shannon, she filled that void. (Rumor has it that Shannon was Mr. Melvin's favorite.) His two granddaughters Brooke and Hope were his pride and joy. He loved watching them in their school and sporting events and quite often let the referees know what he thought about their calls.

Melvin worked for MDOT for 37 years. After retiring, he enjoyed spending time with his beloved family, gardening, hunting, and woodworking. Melvin was quite a character and was loved by all who knew him. He was kind, generous, and knew how to keep everyone laughing. He will truly be missed by his family and his many friends.

All services will be held at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, right outside of West, Mississippi, where Melvin was a faithful member all of his life. Visitation will be held from 9:30 until 11:00 on Saturday, May 7 with the funeral and burial immediately following. Bro. Lyn Nations, Bro. Dean Stewart, and Bro. David Westmoreland will officiate. Pallbearers are Joe McLellan, Bill Grace, Allen Burrell, Randy Sutton, Trey McClellan, and Darrell Green. Members of Emory Hunting Club and the Deacons of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Mount Pleasant Cemetery Fund, P. O. Box 1113, West, MS 39192.
